It could be mate v mate By Andrew King TWO FORMER New Brighton players could meet this month on the international rugby stage. Phil Burleigh has been selected for the Scottish national squad while his good mate Ryan Crotty has made the All Black centre position his own. The duo spent plenty of time together growing up, playing through the grades at New Brighton and in the same first XV side at Shirley Boys’ High during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Now there is a chance they could line up against each other during the end of year tour when

the All Blacks play Scotland on November 18 at Murrayfield. Phil’s father, Wayne, said if you told him five years ago it would happen he would have said ‘you’re crazy.’ “We are pinching ourselves about the fact it could happen. It would be a dream come true if he could play Ryan,” he said. Both have played each other at Super Rugby and provincial level. “They are really good mates. After one game they were still on the field after half an hour, chatting away,” Wayne said. Crotty’s father Steve and Wayne have been mates for years and even flatted together “many years ago” on Marine Pde and also

played rugby in the same New Brighton team during the 80s. “It is a special occasion for both families,” Steve said. “We know exactly what they are going through after hearing about the selection. We have been through it and we know how proud they will be,” he said. Phil joined Edinburgh Rugby on a two-year deal in the summer of 2014 from the Highlanders and extended his contract in 2016 for another two. His time spent playing rugby in Scotland saw him eligible for selection in the national side. He does have Scottish heritage with his great-grandmother born in Aberdeen, but the requirement for entry into the national side cuts off at the grandparents. Another former New Brighton player Kieron Fonotia could also be selected for Manu Samoa for the test against Scotland on November 11 at Murrayfield. Coincidentally, he also was in the same Shirley first XV team in 2005 with Burleigh and Crotty. Shirley head of rugby John Fox said they were all were incredibly talented, but they had to work for it. “They all put in the hard work to get to where they are. They are great examples to the up-andcoming kids in rugby,” he said.

ALL POWER to the Guardians of Rawhiti Domain. On page 3 today, we highlight their bid to save the domain from being grabbed for housing. The domain, and the golf course within it, is a special part of New Brighton and it would be a sad day indeed if it became congested with housing. But the drums are beating and no doubt developers will have already set their sights on the land, which suffered minimal liquefaction during the quakes. The initial talk is to amalgamate the Rawhiti and Avondale golf courses in the red zone – and there’s a lot of merit in that. But the guardians fear if that happens, then the rest of the domain will be ripe for the taking for housing. I tend to agree. –Barry Clarke

News Rawhiti guardians stand firm By Sophie Cornish THE GUARDIANS of Rawhiti is firmly against losing any parts of the Rawhiti Domain for housing purposes. Discussions around housing on the domain arose when Regenerate Christchurch released its 10 combinations of land uses for the red zone. Five of the 10 options include a land swap between Rawhiti and Avondale golf courses. If put in motion, it would see the golf courses combined and moved to Bexley. Housing would replace the golf course land in Rawhiti Domain. Guardians of Rawhiti cofounder Cathy Baker said the group opposes the idea vehemently. “Rawhiti is our green-space, our sports ground and our events and recreation area, especially when the beach is inhospitable. Rawhiti is our community heart,” said Mrs Baker. Monarch butterflies which inhabit the trees near the golf course will be lost, as well as bird life which Mrs Baker believes is already decreasing. Loss of a sports and recreation hub is another concern. “By breaking it up we lose the

cohesiveness in our community. It is an economic advantage for various sports codes to share this space and it improves the wellbeing of our community. We want it left intact,” said Mrs Baker. A decline of events in the domain may also prevail due to noise complaints, if housing is built there. Lastly, a concern that the golf course is “just the first push” to losing the rest of the land on the domain is a serious concern, said Mrs Baker, who believes if the land swap happens, it will set a precedent for building on the rest of the domain. Rawhiti Golf Club vice presi-

dent Leon Zilinskas said the club has no definite opinion yet on the land swap option. “We are carrying on business as usual and are nowhere near making any more decisions unless there are more facts and figures on the table . . . obviously we wouldn’t be making any real commitment to anything until we know a hell of a lot more,” said Mr Zilinskas. Mr Zilinskas did say if everything fell into place they may be supportive of the land swap, however, it would come down to a vote from the entire club. DOG RESTRICTIONS Dog owners should be aware of beach restrictions that came into place on November 1. Dogs are prohibited within 100m either side from the surf life saving club pavilions from 9am to 7pm at Spencer Park, Waimairi Beach, North Beach, and South Brighton Beach. For New Brighton Beach, dogs are prohibited for a distance of 100m in a northerly direction of the surf life saving club’s pavilion, to a point 100m southward of the pier. Dogs can pass through these prohibited areas, however, they must be on a short leash. The restrictions will continue until the end of March. CORRECTION Whoops, we made a major mistake last week. In our New Brighton Museum sports stars article we said the person right was netballer Judy Blair. Of course it wasn’t. It was Marise Chamberlain, a New Zealand middle-distance runner and bronze Olympic medalist. We apologise for the error.

By Sophie Cornish RABBITS ON the Anzac Drive, New Brighton and Travis Rds roundabouts could be culled or caught and released elsewhere. The New Zealand Transport Agency is yet to make a decision on their future. However, an NZTA spokeswoman said the highway maintenance team is putting in place a rabbit control operation over the coming weeks. “In the meantime, we encourage people to take their safety responsibilities and that of the other drivers on this busy road seriously and concentrate on the road and safe driving,” she said. “People should not be venturing on to the traffic island for their own safety and the safety of other drivers.” About 20 black rabbits have been spotted at the busy roundabouts. Some motorists posted their concerns on the People’s Independent Republic of New Brighton Facebook page about people wanting to view the rabbits. The concerns raised were about motorists driving slowly to look at them and others parking up and crossing the road with children to get to the roundabouts. Transport for Christchurch

THE ICONIC New Brighton whale will be cloned in order to fit in with the new seaside playground. The existing whale will remain in place for the summer, but the clone will be placed on the playground’s new splash pad, meaning there will be two whales for a short time. Following engineering inspections, Development Christchurch Ltd revealed the whale is too fragile to be moved to its new playground home. DCL chief executive Rob Hall said during a recent investigation it became clear moving the whale would not be a simple exercise. “We’ve had the engineers look at numerous solutions as we know how important it is to the community,” he said. “However, due to the age and fragility of the whale, it is highly unlikely that it can be moved

to its new splash pad home successfully, so we had to find a new solution. New Brighton without a whale was never a solution so a new replica whale is being made,” said Mr Hall. A fibreglass mould is being taken of the existing whale and this will then be strengthened and reinforced in the factory. A new replica will be constructed and installed in the splash pad in December. Arrangements will be made next year for the original whale’s departure, and DCL will discuss this with the community closer to the time. Mr Hall says the importance of the whale has always been at the forefront of the playground design. “The whale has long been a family favourite in the area so right from the start of this project it has been an integral feature. In fact, we have basically built the playground around it.”

Businesses snap up mall spaces By Sophie Cornish BUSINESSES ARE snapping up the last of the vacant spots at New Brighton Mall in preparation for the area’s upcoming development. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Lonsdale said there are a small number of vacant spaces left in buildings that can be occupied. Vacancies have reduced by 14 per cent since January and Mr Lonsdale said he has received a number of calls from businesses looking to move out to New Brighton. He said developments, such as the new playground, hot water pools, and Marine Pde and New Brighton Mall upgrades, are building pressure on investors to snap up available space. “The over-arching theme is that there is a lot of people looking out there to invest their businesses in New Brighton because they see it as the next shining opportunity,” said Mr Lonsdale. The number of vacant usable shops in January was 21 but there are now only 11 spaces available. There are more spaces which can be made available, but they require remediation before becoming tenantable.

Library wi-fi to stay connected By Sophie Cornish WI-FI AT the New Brighton library will not be shut off to reduce loitering and anti-social behaviour. City council has said free wi-fi service at metropolitan, suburban and neighbourhood libraries is a service level in the current Long Term Plan and cannot be changed. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board requested city council look into the matter following an attack on a restaurant manager from Salt On The Pier, which is adjacent to the library. Youths often congregate in the library’s lobby after hours and use the free wi-fi. The victim asked a group of loitering youths to move on and was held down and punched by a group of three. The upstairs part of the restaurant can only be accessed via the lobby area. Therefore closing the foyer at night is not an option. The city council said various possibilities for after hours access to the foyer and restaurant are being discussed with restaurant management.

Mural puts colour back in Mairehau

Now Richard ‘Popx’ Baker is painting a mural on the alleyway between Mairehau Primary School and Innes Rd. And the idea came entirely from children in the community. The Neighbourhood Trust and Child and Youth Friendly Cities have organised the artwork, which features Mairehau pupils planting a garden. Trust manager Ginny Larsen said it’s been a great result from a collaboration effort. “The project started twoand-a-half years ago when the trust was working with children from Mairehau Primary asking them what they liked about the area,

Miss Sullivan, 20, is a performing arts student and recently won the national title of Miss Five Crowns New Zealand represented Canterbury. Charity work is a big component of the pageant and this year’s chosen charity was Youthline. Participants were required to raise money for the charity. Miss Sullivan raised $3000 through bake sales and raffles. However, the bulk of the money came from bucket collections. Miss Sullivan collected money outside Countdown, Northlands

Miss Sullivan said pageant organisers encouraged them to learn more about mental health in New Zealand. “The pageant encouraged us to educate ourselves more about mental health and youth suicide rates in New Zealand and I ended up finding out a lot of things and heard a lot of people’s stories.” “I really found out what makes Christchurch so special, it’s the people, we are resilient people at the end of the day. I am so proud to be representing my region,” said Miss Sullivan.

Said Ms Larsen: “We thought this would be lovely but we’ve got no money.” That’s when Child and Youth Friendly Cities came on board. Ms Larsen said the group really liked the fact that it was the voices and ideas of local children being heard. “They want more children’s ideas put into practice and bring some light into the city.” Photos were sent through to Mr Baker, who works on the mural whenever the weather is good. Many large-scale murals by Mr Baker feature across the city from a building at Phillipstown School to the “wall of love” in New Brighton.

Star Wars theme nets third at jump jam SCHOOLS By Sophie Cornish A TEAM of Queenspark School pupils finished third at the national jump jam competition with their unique Star Wars theme. The Saber Sisters took out several other awards at the event, including distinction for presentation, technical execution and costuming, and excellence awards for creativity and sportsmanship. They also received a standing ovation from the judges. Previously the school has only ever competed in the novice grade. It was the first time there has ever been a Star Wars themed performance in the jump jam competition. Teacher and coach Karen Pearce is a Star Wars fan and decided on the idea because it

was something different that had never been done before. The team of year 7 and 8 pupils travelled to Auckland for the competition, which took place at Westlake Boys’ High School. The performance included a Darth Vader character and lightsabers as props. The national event takes place every two years and the team was required to submit a video audition to gain entry to the competition.

Haeata pupils create and sell their own uniforms By Sophie Cornish A GROUP of Haeata Community Campus pupils have been given the opportunity to redesign their school uniform. Ten pupils in years 7-10 were given a loan of $2500 from the school to create t-shirts to sell at the uniform shop. They are slowly making a small profit and hope to reinvest the money and expand the uniform range. The designs being used are some the school received from Ariki Creative and the pupils arranged the compositions into two new designs. The project is part of a larger learning campaign within the school involving 50 students. The project is looking at propaganda and school culture. Teacher Clark Williams said the students realised it is far easier to produce negative propaganda than positive messages which take a lot more work. The uniform re-design was one way the pupils felt they could use

a positive technique to change school culture. Mr Williams believes the new “wicked uniform alternatives” will create a positive change for the pupils. The t-shirts cost $15 each

HOW TO COOK BARBECUE GRILLED BUTTERFLIED WHOLE CHICKEN

Ingredients

2 bunches Asparagus 1 Avocado 1 Lemon 1 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil 1 Pepper 1⅓ cups Dried cranberries ½ cup Walnuts ¼ cup Parsley 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper

1 whole butterflied chicken 1 to taste salt & freshly ground pepper Barbecue sauce Directions Preheat grill to medium. Get surface temperature to about 200 deg C. Clean and oil well. Clean the chicken if you desire and pat dry. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with sharp kitchen scissors. You could use a knife, but the scissors are much safer and work great. With a large knife, give the breastbone a large nick in the front of the chicken to help the bird lay flat. Rinse the inside of the bird out, trim any loose fat and extra skin. Pat dry again. Give the bird a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. You could use any seasoning you want here. Place skin down on the grill. Flip after you get a nice browning on the skin after about 12-15min.

Directions

Give the chicken a good brushing of barbecue sauce. Grill another 3-4min until the sauce is browning well.

News Huge turnout for bike show By Sophie Cornish THE SMASH Palace Bike Show took New Brighton by storm on Saturday. “It went really well, everyone had a ball,” said event organiser Jason Mill. Originally, 20 heats were planned for the demonstration but Mr Mill said on the day there was close to 60. Tony Hockley, 82, son of former bike enthusiast and founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club Geoff Hockley, raced on the day. The event was linked to the late Mr Hockley, who was involved in the first ever bike races on New Brighton beach in the early 1900s. Event organisers had one lap planned for Tony, who ended up lining up for the next six races afterwards. “We couldn’t get him off the bike,” said Mr Mill. Between 3000-4000 spectators showed up and the seaside market said they had one of their busiest markets of the year, said Mr Mill. Originally the event was planned to be biennial, however, following feedback from spectators, Mr Mill thinks this may change. “The word I kept hearing was next year . . . if the community wants it, we will do it.”

Plenty to do at McKenzie Lifestyle Village

Big crowd expected for Rockabilly Show and Shine By Sophie Cornish CLOSE TO 10,000 people are estimated to attend the Rockabilly Show and Shine event at Rawhiti Domain on Saturday. Event organisers are expecting a crowd of between 8000-10,000 after 9000 people attended last year. The vintage vehicle show will have a vehicle display, live entertainment, helicopter simulator, live airbrushing demonstrations, rock ‘n’ roll dance displays, a drag race (men running in dresses), children’s entertainment and more than 90 market stalls. The winner of the largest pin-up competition in the world, Miss Viva Las Vegas, will also attend. Monique Kimber-Bell, also known as Miss Monique Sweet, won the title in Las Vegas in April and will be judging the Belle and Beau pin-up competiton on the day.

Event organiser Robbie Baigent hopes to see more than 400 vehicles on display this year, including vintage caravans and motor-cycles. This will be an increase from the 350 on display last year. There is a cost of $10 to display vehicles and a gold coin donation on entry, with all proceeds going back into community groups and organisations. A long standing agreement with the New Brighton Project means funds from this year’s show will be donated to the organisation to help run the New Brighton Christmas Parade and The Blanket Bank. New Brighton Cricket Club will also receive funding for its new clubrooms after an arson attack in 2015 destroyed the old clubrooms. Mr Baigent and several other organisers want to see the event boost the

profile of the city’s east. “We do have a vested interest, we live here, it is our community. We have seen the struggles New Brighton has gone through over the years, especially since the earthquakes, and we want to do our bit to give it a lift.” “We support people who wouldn’t get a lot of support otherwise . . . we are a lot better funded this year for the event so if we get a good day, we can put more back into the community,” said Mr Baigent.

I’m mentioning it here because school fires are one of the most unsettling for communities to deal with.
